Something new and old is coming to North Campus. The Texas Academic Decathlon is going to be hosted by North on Feb. 26 and 27.
The Texas Decathlon is a competition between high school students facing off in various academic contests such as Math, Economics, and Science. The decathlon also features a Super Quiz test and a Super Quiz relay event.
This year's decathlon will be including 40 high schools from around Texas that either won their regional competition or placed in the top 40 at the regional event. The winning school will advance to the national tournament, which will be held in April in Omaha, Nebraska. This will be the second time North Campus hosts this event, which only occurred because Sue Edwards, state director for the Texas Academic Decathlon had local ties to North. San Jacinto College faculty and students will serve as volunteer judges, test proctors and greeters for the competition.
There are some new changes going around Central Campus. The changes will be in the form of better drainage systems and repaving of Abshire Drive. Construction workers will be removing the current asphalt, replace the old drainage system and replacement of the concrete. The construction already started and is scheduled to end on March 13th.
This will inconvenience students who enter on Oak Haven off of Luella, students who want to park in lot 7, 8 & 9 and students who want to park in front of Anderson and Ball Tech, Also, pedestrian traffic between the Health Science Building and Slocomb Auditorium will not be permitted. Though on a brighter note access to the Student Center Load dock will be available so all deliveries can be made there.
Now on South Campus the San Jacinto men's soccer team will be hosting the Houston Intercollegiate Futbol Fiesta and Kicks for Hunger Clinic on Feb. 20.
Any one from age 6 to 18 can participate in the clinic from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. by bringing either two canned food items or nonperishable goods. The supplies will be donated to a local food pantry. The matches of the Futbol Fiesta will be St, Thomas University vs. the Houston Leones PDL at 6 p.m. and then followed by Houston Baptist University vs. SJC at 8 p.m.
