Halloween is the time of year when ghosts ghouls and goblins haunt. Plus it is a blast. You get to dress up and imagine yourself as a being anything you could possibly want to be. As for those who like to dress on the darker side, it can sometimes feel like a release to act like something awful. This holiday is all about letting loose. People go out of reality and step into this alternate reality. What is so bad about people enjoying themselves and having fun?

Many cultures around the world celebrate it in different forms. After all, it is the one time of year the living commune with the dead. It is used in many different religions in many different guises. There is El Día de Los Muertos where the dead join the living in celebration. Some people even eat with their deceased loved ones at cemeteries. This holiday is an accepted ritual in Mexico. It is celebrated in honor of the dead rather than in fear of the dead. In the early Celtic festival Samhain, which marked the end of their summer, the dead and spirits of the otherworld could join the living. Christians observed the holiday All-Hallowmas or "All Saints Day" around the same time of year as they celebrated deceased saints and on the following day, the dead.

The holiday certainly is great for businesses. Americans spend a lot of money on pounds and pounds of candy, costumes and props. It is one of two times a year that people transform the outside of their homes. Every year people walk outside and see lights and monsters and all other kinds of decorations. The cost to transform a house into a haunted manor is extreme. Other businesses make loads of money with Halloween themes added to their attractions.

Halloween is a social event too. People celebrate Halloween with other people. Trick-or-treaters come up to people's homes in hopes of getting candy. Older participants go to costume parties and other events. People stay home to greet trick-or-treaters and hand out candy and small toys to them. Some families make a big thing out of it and sit together with neighboring families in someone's driveway or front lawn and hand out candy together and talk. Parents escorting their children from house to house will travel with other parents and their kids and talk while their children are scouting for the best candy. Halloween can be seen as a test of courage for small children. These kids measure their courage by who can ring the doorbell on the spooky house and dare to ask for candy.

Halloween is a very happy holiday. Why else would people greet each other with "Happy Halloween?" People play many games around this time of year, like bobbing for apples, guessing games and costume contests. People love to be scared. It is a key part of Halloween and allows people to let out a scream to calm themselves down. That is why people watch horror movies and go to haunted houses. This is a great thing to do because at this time of year you expect to see something scary and you are prepared for it.

Halloween is a great time of year and should be celebrated. There is nothing like pretending to be something else and enjoying the thrill of being frightened.
