Birds chirped and soared above as if to marvel at the vast landscape of greenery.
With a small flurry of wind, the leaves rustled off the trees and slowly drifted downwards to blemish the sprawling green land.
And for that moment -- that lonely, solitary moment -- euphoria sets in.
From the outside looking in, you wouldn't think of a pleasant place being so close to home, but San Jacinto College's golf course is a stone's throw away from the very place you're reading this article.
Located off of Cunninhgam and Fairmont Parkway on the southwest section of the campus, San Jac's golf course boasts 2,638 square yards of Bermuda grass for your golfing experience.
The San Jac golf course is 9-hole regulation length course that is United States Golf Association rated with a par of 36. It also has 3 sets of tee boxes: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The course is open year round, 6 a.m. to dark, weather permitting.
Although the San Jac golf course was newly remodeled in 2000, it has been a long standing establishment here at the San Jac Central campus.
The public university golf course was originally constructed in 1964, but the 2000 remodeling found the course closed for almost a year. The remodeling brought along new green construction with the addition of four man-made hazard ponds, complete with ducks.
For starters, the golf course offers a great deal in this time of economic downturn.
The green fees are only $10 on weekdays and $12 on weekends. Additionally, the green fee is valid for continuous play throughout the day. The golf course's reasonable prices and smooth greens make it a good destination for students on a budget.
Ray David -- pro shop attendant and avid golfer -- recalls the early days of the San Jac course. He contends that it's a great spot for area golfers and he is satisfied with the thrifty services that are also offered to the San Jac community.
"I remember when this whole area was a cow pasture. It was an open land area before, I'm glad the school made good use of the land. Also, the best part about the course is that all contributions and fees made go directly to the school," said David, an experienced golfer. "I mean, where else can you go and pay 10 bucks and enjoy golf all day long. A couple could come for the day and play for all but $20. Additionally, although there aren't any discounts for San Jacinto students, students enrolled in the golf class receive two free days of golf a week."
