"We spoke to them and said, you know, this is a little bit harsh," Frazier said, "but it's a student newspaper, and it ran. Well, the proverbial you-know-what hit the fan when one of them wrote an editorial that praised an incident of a doctor being shot while minding his business by a pro-life supporter. The editorial was stupid, and the foolish thing was that they were considering themselves pro-life, but they were justifying murder. I don't know how exactly how the (television) news crews got it, but Ms. Walker was out of town with a group, while I was here doing damage control."

"I have always encouraged the students to follow the First Amendment, also, I've always encouraged them to be responsible," Walker said. "The issue that happened with this group was that although the staff agreed to the stance of the editorial, after it hit the news and we came back and learned that they didn't necessarily agree with him, but they wanted to be supportive of him. It was a great learning experience. They learned a really good lesson. I am so thankful that I have always had an extremely supportive administration because even when it was something that they didn't like, they were always supportive of the San Jacinto Times."

Outside of the classroom, Walker also donates more time to her service sorority organization, Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA), in which she has been a respected member of for more than 35 years. The organization raises money for the children of St. Jude children's Research Hospital. Having held every office position in her chapter including state president, she currently serves as the greater Houston volunteer coordinator, which consists of organizing a gala and golf tournament for fundraisers, and also working 13-hour radiothons. The members of her service organization created a scholarship in memory of a former member who died from cancer, and has raised an estimate of $800,000 for the greater Houston area.

"Royce is one of those people that you can call anytime and she'll be there, no questions asked," Sharon Campbell, service member, said. "I don't know how much more time she can give, but I'm sure that she will continue to work with the organization. She's learned how to prioritize everything in her life very well, however the charity work may be a close second in her life to her granddaughter."
