Preparations are underway for North campus celebration of the campus and its student organizations, the annual festival this year features a one of a kind Jeff Gordon Stock car simulator.
This simulator, the only full-sized one of its kind, promises to give Gator Day attendees a real feel for what it is like to be behind the wheel of a stock car whipping along at speeds in excess of 200 mph.
While the simulator is the newest attraction, the festival has long been a crucial fundraiser for numerous campus student organizations who go to great lengths to raise money and awareness of their respective organizations.
This years event takes place March 10 in the courtyard behind the Slovacek Student Center. Campus organizations will man booths throughout the event.
Those in attendance will have the opportunity to feast on a wide variety of cuisine, including hot wings and fries sponsored by the Cosmetology dual credit program, barbecue offered by Phi Theta Kappa and even faux gator meat (pork) offered by Air Conditioning repair students.
Students can quench their thirst with beverages, including root beer and coke floats sponsored by the Anime club. Those who crave something sweet can indulge in cotton candy sponsored by nursing students .
One organization opting for something other than the traditional fundraiser is the North campus student government.
Sponsor Amy Brandon said, "Instead of a traditional fundraiser, we are opting to honor service men and women with the sale of yellow ribbons. The proceeds will go either to the USO or a charity for disabled veterans."
In addition to the food and fun, organizations will be recruiting, and handing out free information regarding the organizations as well and registration information will be available at the festival.
Financial aid advisors will also be present to assist students interested in grant, loan and scholarship information.
Student life coordinator Lamar McWaine emphasized the public nature of Gator Day saying, "We would like folks from the community to come out and enjoy the campus at Gator Day and to also see what San Jacinto College North has to offer."
Sophomore business major Amanda Herrick is looking forward to the event. "The barbecue is normally first rate, and the NASCAR simulator looks like it would be a lot of fun to try."
The festivities begin at noon on Tuesday, March 10 and will conclude at 6 p.m.
