Last week North and South campus held their annual Gator and Coyote days to help student organizations raise money and provide entertainment.

On April 15 at North, Gator Day promised to be an event full of fun. Students were presented with food, activities and drawings for prizes.

The event also presented an opportunity not only for students, but for the clubs and organizations themselves.

"It's a great chance for some of the clubs to get their name out," Jayden Walters, student at North, said. "I think once you give students an opportunity to get to know what's offered, there's a chance they will take an interest."

The festivities took place in the courtyard outside of the Slovacek Student Center.

On April 16, South held Coyote Day outside the J.D Bruce Student Center's north lawn.

At the University of Houston Clear Lake table, the enticing aroma of popcorn filled the air as several students gathered around for information and food.

"What better way to get somebody's attention, especially with so many things happening at once," Dayna Reed, student at North, said.

A grown-up take on a popular children's activity was made available for students to play throughout the afternoon. The yellow and blue castle shaped spacewalk included oversized red and blue boxing gloves for opponents to relieve the stress of exams and the mental demand of term papers with the semester drawing to an end.

"That was more fun than I ever remember moonwalks being!" Bryan Walters, student at North, joked as he took off his pair of red boxing gloves.

BEST Club's table offered baskets filled with all kinds of goodies. A baseball themed basket filled with a ball and Astros tickets were one of many prizes that caught hopeful eyes.

"We are a mentoring program for the children center," assistant director Sherry Mays said. "Today we are raising money for extra curricular activities for children."

A voter registration table encouraged students who have not taken the opportunity yet to register, to take a minute and let their voices be heard in time for the upcoming presidential election.

Local radio station 97.9 the Box had DJ KleanCutt & J.Fresh drop by for a couple of hours in the afternoon to entertain students.

The cosmetology department's table offered students henna tattoos drawn by several cosmetology students.

"We are raising money for the SkillsUSA National Competition," Dana Belt, cosmetology instructor at South, said. "We are very proud to be sending two students this year to Kansas. I'd say so far we have raised about $75 to $100."

SkillsUSA is a national organization serving high school and college students who are enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled and service occupations.

The cosmetology department has won nationals for the past five years they have attended.

Both Coyote and Gator day were sponsored by the offices of student life.
