Over 45 dancers of all levels will dazzle the crowd with its 31st annual spring show, inspired by the Beatles, Imagine.
The show debuts Thursday, April 24, with a matinee at 11:30 a.m. and a second show at 7:30 p.m. A third showing of Imagine will take place Friday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. All shows will be held in Central's Slocomb Auditorium.
Sandi Morgan, dance professor at Central, said that this year's spring show has a Beatles theme. The name of the show comes from the popular title of John Lennon song, Imagine.
"I wanted the students' choreography to come from their dreams," Morgan said.
Morgan said that in the chorus of the song there is a line that inspired the choreography of the show, "You may say I'm a dreamer."
Morgan choreographed the opening dance "Strawberry Fields;" however she did not choreograph all 15 dances herself. Former dance students returned with their talent to Central for this year's spring show to choreograph lyrical, jazz, modern and hip-hop routines.
"I fell in love with the dance program here at Central," Taylor Elliot, a former San Jac student and Comets dancer, said. "I keep coming back to dance and choreograph even though I am a full-time student at the University of Houston."
Elliott returned to Central to help choreograph one of the dance numbers to the Beatles song "Because" with Eleanor Rugby. She said that she had cheered for 10 years before she focused on dancing.
"I realized that you can not major in cheerleading, I lucked in to dance," Elliott said. "The dance program at San Jac opened my eyes the world of dancing."
This year's show does not only contain dance numbers choreographed with Beatles ballads. It also contains some jazz and hip-hop music including a song by Janet Jackson, "Feedback."
"I am excited but nervous, since this is my first dance performance at San Jac," Levi Hernandez, a student at Central, said. "I will be dancing in six different routines ."
The public is invited to attend all shows at the cost of a $5 donation tp Central's dance scholarship fund. San Jac students, staff and faculty have free admission to any of the shows. The Thursday matinee showing of Imagine is free to high school groups. Morgan encourages groups wanting to attend the Thursday matinee to call ahead of time for reservations. For reservations or more information about the show call 281-476-1501, ext. 1425.
