With spring break approaching, there are many issues that student travelers need to be aware of before going on a week-long vacation.

Spring break has always been a time for students to let loose, forget about school and enjoy a break.

There are many popular vacation spots for students to travel to, some of which include the beaches of Cancun, several places in Florida, the slopes of Colorado, as well as South Padre Island here in Texas.

Before making that week-long trip, cautionary matters should be taken, especially if traveling out of the country.

The No. 1 spring break vacation hot-spot for the past decade has been Cancun.

According to StudentSpringBreak.com, thousands of college students flock to Cancun every spring, and it is continuously growing.

When traveling out of the country, it is extremely important to remember to have a passport.

New laws passed in 2007 states that all travelers by air must have a passport to return into the United States.

There are several things that are needed when applying for a passport. Applicants must have a valid birth certificate, government identification card and social security card. Applicants also need to have a $100 for the application fee as well as two passport photos.

Passports take anywhere from one day to 10 weeks to receive. If the recipient is in a rush an additional $60 fee can be paid to rush, the application process.

For more information on passports and locations or to apply for a passport, go to www.travel.state.gov.

Also when leaving the country, travelers need to be aware of the laws and dangers that come with visiting a foreign country.

According to the United States government, travelers should be aware of their surroundings at all times. The website states that tourists are more prone to things like burglary and rape.

If students intend to stay in the country and enjoy their spring break, there are also safety risks that need to be taken into consideration.
